ABOUT THE CREATOR

MEET EMMA

One of my first independent entrepreneurial endeavors consisted of creating an entire display of handmade bracelets. My plan was to sell them at the local Saturday market with my Papa (my grandfather) while he sold his book. In my 14-year-old eyes, it was one of my greatest accomplishments and I really thought I was going to be a total. Business. Bitch. I was stoked.  After hours of no sales and barely any interest, I watched my Papa “sneakily” exchange some cash with two women who had previously passed up my offer for a 2 for 1 deal. My only customers for the day were literally paid to buy my product. Yikes. (But also, shout out to Larry Cushing for being my #1 hype man and footing the bill for my first sponsorship.)
Creating art can be so personal. It starts as something that literally no one else knows about - a little secret. Then, if you are like me, you spend hours, sometimes days, building or drawing it in your head before you even attempt to bring it into the real world. Finally, you go for it and more often than not, it looks completely different than that image you thought you knew. Sometimes you scrap it and just start over. sometimes you continue to fine tune it until it feels more familiar. and sometimes you just move on. Either way, you have built a relationship with this little creation throughout the process. Then comes the scary part - you let others see it. It's like letting a stranger walk right into your brain and judge it.
Building this small business is like allowing little bits of myself to be scattered about, completely out in the open. Ready to be judged. It is exciting, but also a bit intimidating, which can easily lead to the constructing of imaginary roadblocks. for years, i have put this passion project on the back burner as i sketched out a life plan centered around my day job - creating Hurdles i had to get over before i felt settled enough that I could really let myself dive into doing something i love. At the moment, that day job plan seems to be crumpled up in the corner until further notice and i've got nothing but time on my hands. Turns out its hard to find an excuse not do something when all of your made up obstacles have suddenly disappeared.
Long story short, I’m completely out of my comfort zone & I’m doing what I love most & I’m hoping it goes a lot better than my bracelet business.

XO, Emma
